This article profiles Daniel Schuman, a long-time advocate for congressional transparency and reform in Washington D.C. Schuman’s career began as an intern for Senator Joseph Lieberman on September 11, 2001, and has since spanned two decades working in and around Capitol Hill. Throughout his career, he has worked at the Congressional Research Service and various nonprofit organizations, focusing on improving congressional operations and transparency.

The article highlights Schuman’s efforts to reverse what he sees as damage done to the legislative branch during the Newt Gingrich era, including cuts to support agencies and committee staff. Some of his successes include raising staff pay ceilings, making CRS reports publicly available online, and establishing the Office of the Whistleblower Ombuds. Schuman is known for his weekly newsletter, the First Branch Forecast, which covers niche legislative branch topics. He has recently launched his own nonprofit, the American Governance Institute, where he plans to continue his work on strengthening Congress and addressing flaws in American democracy.
